"I don't need the Prince Charming
to have my own happy ending"

Katy Perry cover story for L’UOMO VOGUE magazine

With her green or shocking pink hair and her Harajuku girl clothing that makes her seem like a character who’s just stepped out of a cartoon or a Tim Burton movie, Katy Perry has managed to create a unique and unmistakable image and catalyze the curiosity not only of fashion bloggers but of the world media. Her music, pop designed to be hummed in the car, stuffed with catchy little hooks and double entendres, is all the rage with the teenagers who flock to her concerts, but it also sparks interest among adults. Otherwise there would be no explanation for her scary worldwide success in terms of sales, which is even more impressive if you consider that the official tallies don’t include the widespread phenomenon of music piracy.

Over the last four years, since the release of I Kissed a Girl, the smash single from her One of the Boys album (2008) which catapulted her to celebrity Olympus, Katy Perry has sold well over 37 million digital singles in the USA alone, and 11 million albums worldwide. The 27-year-old from Santa Barbara also holds the all-time record for a single in the Top Ten – 69 weeks – and she is the only artist in history to have had six number one singles from the same album: California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T., Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), and more recently, The One That Got Away, all from Teenage Dream (2010).

No artist before her, not even titans like Elvis Presley, the Beatles or Madonna was able to pull it off. Only Michael Jackson came close at the height of his career. Among Katy’s upcoming projects is an autobiographical docu-film in 3D titled Katy Perry A Part of Me, which is scheduled for release in the States on July 4th, Independence Day (in Italy we’ll have to wait till August 4th), which she promises will deal with “everything in between”, including the pain of her separation from English actor/comedian Russell Brand, to whom Katy was married for 15 months in one of the most media-magnetic relationships in recent memory (with its own dedicated Twitter feed) until the divorce proceedings last February. A pain that the singer has described as “devastating”, and that will influence her next project. “It will be a much darker album than the previous ones”, she said. “It was inevitable, after what I went through. If I had a time machine and could go back in time, I would. But I can’t, so, you’ll discover another part of me”.
